What are the causes of eczema ?
Atopic eczema is likely to be caused by a combination of factors.
Research has shown that children who have 1 or both parents with atopic eczema, or who have other siblings with eczema, are more likely to develop it themselves.
We believe that the single most important factor causing the inflammation in Atopic Eczema and it’s tendency to flare is the presence of bacterial infection (Staphylococcus Aureus) on the skin of eczema patients.
There are a number of other triggers that may inflame or exacerbate eczema symptoms.
Common triggers include:
chemical irritants – such as soaps and detergents
environmental factors or allergens – humidity, temperature
allergens - such as house dust mites, pet dander, pollen
food allergies, E-numbers and certain food types
certain materials worn next to the skin – such as wool and synthetic fabrics
hormonal changes – women may find their symptoms get worse in the days before their period or during pregnancy
stress
exercise and sweating
